20140911-DSC_8154Last month I hiked to the summit of north Idaho’s Scotchman Peak in search of its famed mountain goats. None were to be found, but my sister made a good stand-in.

Boundary Trail – Dark Divide

Although open to motorcycles, the Boundary Trail in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest sees little traffic, even on busy summer weekends. If you can handle a few sections of tire-chewed tread, you’ll have views like this to yourself.

Upper Priest Lake

Autumn is an ideal time to backpack to the hike-in camps on north Idaho’s Upper Priest Lake: the bugs are gone and so, too, are most of the crowds; and autumn leaves gather on the beach. Pack some extra hot drinks and take in one of the Inland Northwest’s best tentside views!
