Steptoe Butte State Park

Day Hiking Mt. St. Helens

20120926-_DSC0040It’s official: last week I signed the contract on my first book, Day Hiking Mt. St. Helens, which I will co-write with Craig Romano for Mountaineers Books. This is a homecoming of sorts, since I grew up in SW Washington with Mt. St. Helens in my backyard. I can’t thank Craig enough for the opportunity to work him. We’ve spent a lot of time on the trail together, and we’re excited to show you St. Helens!

Berray Mountain bighorns

20121231-_DSC0041Bighorn sheep ewe on Berray Mountain in western Montana’s Bull River valley. Members of the herd, which numbers about a hundred, like to congregate on Highway 56 in the winter and lick the salt-based de-icer off the highway. Winter is a great time for wildlife watching in the Inland Northwest. Have you had any good wildlife sightings this winter?

Happy New Year (and a day)

20121229-_DSC0020Happy New Year! I spent mine with family and friends at the historic Bull River Guard Station, a Forest Service rental in western Montana. How did you spend yours? And what adventure goals do you have for 2013?
